Undergraduate Credit Options

Credit by Examination

Upon approval of the dean of studies, credit may be granted for some courses in the current catalogue through successful completion of a special examination without regular class attendance. Credit earned in this fashion will satisfy degree and certificate requirements in the same manner as credit earned through regular class attendance, subject to the following provisions:

  1. No more than six credits for the A.A.M. and no more than twelve credits for the A.B. may be earned or granted as Credit by Examination in any one subject area. No more than ten credits for the A.A.M. and twenty credits for the A.B. can be granted in full.
  2. The examination by which the competency is established is determined by the appropriate academic division or discipline.
  3. Credit will be recorded on the students transcript with the grade CR. The student's GPA will not be affected.
  4. The student must be currently enrolled in SHMS and have accumulated at least fifteen hours at Sacred Heart before this credit will be recorded. Earlier credit earned by examination will be applied only after fifteen other hours of credit.
  5. Fees may be applicable for credit by examination.

Credit for Specialized Experience

Upon approval of the dean of studies, credit may be granted, without fee payment, for specialized service and experience according to the following stipulations:

  1. Credit will be granted for only one of the following training or service experiences: ministerial experience; work in a helping profession; military, conscientious objector, Peace Corps, or Vista experiences.
  2. Credit will be granted only after at least one year of ministerial experience, one year of active duty in the military, completion of alternative community service as a conscientious objector, or completion of the tour of duty in the Peace Corps or Vista.
  3. Credit may be granted by the dean of studies to students with other specialized experiences that are appropriate to the course of studies but are not delineated above.
  4. The credit is applied toward electives within a curriculum and does not apply toward the specified requirements of the degree.
  5. The credit will be recorded on the students transcript with the grade CR. The student's GPA will not be affected.
  6. To obtain the credits, a student must meet the following criteria: (a) be currently registered or have earned credit for at least one catalogue course; and (b) present official certificates or appropriate portfolio to the dean of studies to verify the student's specialized experience.

 Credit at Non-Consortium Institutions

  1. Undergraduates who wish to take courses at institutions other than those in the Consortium must:
  2. Obtain a Michigan Uniform Undergraduate Guest Application from the Registrar's Office.
  3. Complete the form and return it to the Registrar's Office for proper certification.
  4. Confirm with advisor or Dean of Studies Office that course will qualify for transfer credit.
  5. After completing the course(s) as a "guest student," it is the student's responsibility to have an official transcript sent to the Registrar's Office at SHMS.

Credits taken during "guest student status" will be applied toward a degree program only if this policy is complied with prior to completing the course(s) and the final grade for the course(s) is C or better.
