"I Am Here" Alumni Contemplate Fourth Station at Evening of Reflection
A fire burned in the hearth of the Bishop Gallagher parlor, casting shadows and warmth. In this contemplative setting, forty Sacred Heart alumni and friends gathered for an evening of prayer, fellowship and a simple meal at the bi-annual Soup n' Supper for the Soul. The Lenten Evening of Reflection for alumni was held on Monday evening, March 14.
After the light meal of soup, salad and bread, Fr. Pat Casey, co-chair of the Alumni Board, opened the event by recalling his own Lenten journey. Later, Father presided at Night Prayer to end the solemn, faith-filled evening.
Fr. Gerald Vincke, director of vocations for the Diocese of Lansing, gave a moving teaching on the Fourth Station, "Jesus Meets His Mother." Using a clip from Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, Father Vincke asked participants to meditate upon the Blessed Mother's simple words, "I am here," and even her silent presence, as she shared in the sufferings of Christ. As Mary strengthened her son in his passion, so, too, does she support us in our daily trials, he explained.
The next Alumni Soup n' Supper Evening of Reflection is scheduled for November. Keep an eye out for your invitation postcard sometime in October. Then mark your calendar and join your fellow alumni for another evening of table fellowship and spiritual nourishment in preparation for the Advent season.
