The Sacred Heart Library Service (SHLS) was initiated in the 1970's as the Theological Library Service at St. John's Provincial Seminary in Plymouth, Michigan. The goal was, and is, to provide access to a unique and substantial collection for those not associated with Sacred Heart Major Seminary.

Since 1988, the Cardinal Szoka Library has been servicing a variety of clientele: faculty, students, Catholic and Protestant clergy, Directors of Religious Education, parish members, scholars and others interested in religious matters.

Carefully developed over several decades, the theology collection has a Roman Catholic focus, but also offers source material that are ecumenical in scope. It is the largest freestanding theological library in Michigan.

SHLS Membership
Annual membership dues are $35.00 per year, payable by cash or check . (Checks can be made to "Sacred Heart Major Seminary.")

Membership Includes:
  • Unlimited Interlibrary Loan service.
  • Book renewals and reference service by mail, phone, fax and e-mail.
  • A subscription to the quarterly newsletter, Straight From The Heart and other library mailings
  • Special invitations to seminary events.
Interlibrary loan (ILL) allows patrons to order books and journal articles that SHMS does not own.  Simply pick up a form at the circulation desk, download the form online, list the citation information for the resource and leave it with a staff person. It's that easy!  Interlibrary loans normally take 5-14 days.  The Library Staff utilizes the OCLC database to search for requested titles worldwide.  We can identify other libraries that own your request, and borrow it on your behalf (borrowing periods and costs may vary).

Order ILL materials in person, by fax, mail, or e-mail with the Interlibrary Loan Request FormE-mail requests that include requested information in the form, such as e-mails sent directly to Szoka.Library@shms.edu from FirstSearch with the subject heading, "INTERLIBRARY LOAN REQUEST" are especially welcome.
