Financial Aid Options
SHMS offers a variety of financial aid options to assist in meeting the needs and educational goals of students.
Sacred Heart Major Seminary Grants and Scholarships
Students may qualify for seminary grants and scholarships available through SHMS. Benefactors, alumni and a number of outside sources have generously contributed to assist in making these grants and scholarships available.
Federal and State Assistance Programs
Archdiocesan Assistance Programs
Financial Aid for Catechetical Leaders (ACE) Awards undergraduate grants for up to 75% tuition for those in catechetical ministry within the Archdiocese of Detroit. Those enrolled in graduate programs are eligible for loans of up to 50% of tuition. Funds are administered through the Department of Education of the Archdiocese of Detroit. Parish Empowerment Fund Scholarship (PEF) Provides tuition assistance to eligible lay people who work as volunteers or paid staff in a parish that meets the financial eligibility requirements for this fund. Scholarships are granted for the pursuit of a preparatory course, a certificate diploma, or undergraduate or graduate degree programs. Applicants should contact the Archdiocese Office of Parish Life at (313) 237-5798.
Pastoral Ministry Grant Application Through the Archdiocese of Detroit Endowment Foundation, this grant provides tuition assistance to eligible individuals attending approved Catholic institutions for study in pastoral ministry certification. This grant is open to Catholic men and women without regard to race, ethnic origin, disability or age. Applicants should contact the Archdiocese Department of Development at (313) 883-8657.
Expanded Work-Study Program
A limited number of work-study positions are available for qualified students. Applications can be obtained through the Financial Aid Office. A FAFSA must be filed.
The Parish
Many parishes provide some tuition assistance for lay ministers who are serving in the parish.
Employers
Some employers have a tuition assistance benefit. Check with your supervisor or Human Resources Department. Some provide tuition assistance only for non-religious courses. This could be especially helpful for those earning an Associate of Arts in Ministry Degree.
