What's New With the Faculty?
Dr. Philip Blosser, professor of philosophy, completed a review of Retrieving the Natural Law: A Return to Moral First Things by J. Daryl Charles (Eerdmans, 2008), which will appearin the National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly, as well as a review of Selves: An Essay in Revisionary Metaphysics by Galen Strawson (Oxford Clarendon Press, 2009), for Current Reviews for Academic Libraries. He is building the website for the Max Scheler Society of North America, under his management, as secretary for the society (www.schelersociety.us).
Fr. Richard Cassidy, professor of Sacred Scripture, was interviewed on the Kresta in the Afternoon program, Ave Maria Radio, June 29. This interview marked the closing of The Year of St. Paul. It was re-broadcast as one of Al Kresta's Top 40 interviews during 2009. Father presented "St. Paul: Persecutor, Apostle, Prisoner," St. James Parish, Novi, Michigan, and "The Year of St. Luke in the Lectionary" for the priests and deacons of the Diocese of Lansing. During the first semester of 2010, he will be on sabbatical, completing his commentary on St. Paul's Letter to the Philippians.
Mr. David Conrad, adjunct professor of undergraduate theology, gave a retreat "Mass Confusion," Dominican Retreat Center, Oxford, Michigan, November 6-8. He presented "Penalty Box?" on the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and "Celebrating Saints," a look at how the life experiences of Blessed John XXIII, Blessed Mother Teresa and St. Joseph can help us in our lives, St. Aidan Parish, Livonia, Michigan.
Dr. Patricia Cooney Hathaway, associate professor of spirituality and systematic theology, attended a fundraiser and presentation on the new Christo Rey High School in the city of Detroit, St. Hugo of the Hills Parish, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, September 16. She presented: "Jesus' Spirituality as the Norm and Guide of Our Own," Central Macomb Vicariate, October 7; "Spirituality and Middle Life Issues," St. Thomas More Parish, Troy, Michigan, November 1 and 8; "Googling God: A Contemporary Spirituality for Busy Adults," St. Alexander Parish, Farmington Hills, Michigan, November 5; "Weaving Faith and Experience: A Woman's Perspective on the Middle Years," Morning Conference, Visitation North Spirituality Center, November 22. Upon the invitation of the Family Life Department of the AOD, she, with her husband, Thomas, taped a presentation on the Spirituality of Marriage for a new TV series on marriage preparation for engaged couples, September 18. She was inducted as a new member with her husband in the Legatus Detroit Chapter, November 19.
Dr. Eduardo Echeverria, professor of philosophy, participated in a panel discussion at the conference Virtue, Sacrifice and the Common Good, Center for Ethics and Culture, University of Notre Dame, November 12-14. His book Dialogue of Love: Confessions of an Evangelical Catholic Ecumenist was published by Wipf and Stock Publishers, Eugene, Oregon.
Dr. Robert Fastiggi, professor of systematic theology, was the executive editor of the 2009 supplement to the New Catholic Encyclopedia published in print and electronic form in November 2009 by Gale Cengage Learning in cooperation with the Catholic University of America Press. He attended the conference of the Fellowship of Catholics Scholars, Providence, Rhode Island, September 25-26. He presented "End of Life Issues," St. Monica Parish, Kalamazoo, Michigan, October 12, and "The Importance of Philosophy for Theology," Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio, November 6. He led a SHMS luncheon colloquy discussion on "Levels of Assent to Magisterial Teaching," December 2. On Monday evenings, he has been teaching a course on "Introduction to Theology," Eastern Catholic Re-Evangelization Center, West Bloomfield, Michigan, and on Friday afternoons in November and December he led classes on the Catechism of the Catholic Church for young men discerning a vocation with the Miles Christi Institute, South Lyon, Michigan.
Dr. Mary Healy, associate professor of Sacred Scripture, gave a six-week course on the Gospel of Mark, St. Francis Parish, Ann Arbor, Michigan, October and November. She presented ten talks on "The Holy Spirit, Scripture and the Fathers of the Church," leadership institute for the International Catholic Charismatic Renewal, Rome, Italy, September 17-23. She gave these talks: "Discovering the Power of God's Word," St. Paul Cathedral, St. Paul, Minnesota, October 29; "Christ's Priesthood and Christian Priesthood in the Epistle to the Hebrews," Letter and Spirit Conference, St. Paul Seminary, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, November 7; "Bearers of the Good News: Women in Scripture Inspiring Women Today," Detroit Women's Conference, November 14; and "Prepare the Way of the Lord," St. Joseph Parish, South Lyon, Michigan, November 29. She was interviewed by Teresa Tomeo on Ave Maria Radio, November 25, and on the Drew Mariani Show, Relevant Radio, December 2. A Czech translation of her book Men and Women Are from Eden was published by Paulínky in Prague.
Fr. Daniel Jones, assistant professor of theology, preached a day of reflection for the Pontifical College Josephinum, Columbus, Ohio, on Evangelical Counsels and Priesthood, November 19.
Dr. Daniel Keating, associate professor of theology, gave these presentations: two lectures on "Catholic Principles and Practices for Ecumenism," Community of Christ the Redeemer, St. Paul, Minnesota, October 9-10; "The Biblical Basis for Celibacy," student body of Huntington College, Indiana, October 13; "Youth Culture and Media," parents and faculty of Spiritus Sanctus Academy, Plymouth, Michigan, October 25; three talks on "Christian Personal Relationships," Eastern Catholic Re-Evangelization Center, September 30, October 28, December 9. He presented a paper at the Letter and Spirit Conference, "The Life-Giving Blessing in Cyril of Alexandria: the Eucharist and Priesthood," Pittsburgh, November 7, and taught a series of classes on Old Testament typology to the Dominican Sisters of Mary, September-December.
Dr. Mark Latkovic, professor of moral and systematic theology, presented "The Survival of the Family in the Secularized World," for the AOD Evangelization Series Saturday sessions, at SHMS, October 17. He continues to direct several STL and MA theses and completed teaching a new STL seminar course: Moral Aspects of Theological Anthropology.

Dr. Michael J. McCallion, Fr. William Cunningham Chair of Catholic Social Analysis and director of the Institute for Research on the New Evangelization (IRNE) reviewed an article for Review of Religious Research, "Ritual Participation and Resistance to Female Clergy Among Lay Catholics." The IRNE administered a survey on the New Evangelization to six parishes in the AOD in September and he presented a paper, "The Implementation of the New Evangelization in Parishes of the AOD," based on these survey results to the Religious Research Association, October 22, Denver, Colorado. He presented "Lessons Learned from Researching the New Evangelization" to a suburban parish in October and to the Southeast Oakland Vicariate, November 19, and gave three lectures in the course Pastoral Care Across Cultures in October. He and Dr. Bennett-Carpenter completed three manuscripts that are still under review at the journals The Sociological Quarterly, The Journal of Contemporary Ethnography and Nova Religio: The Journal of Alternative and Emergent Religions. IRNE began research on young adults and the New Evangelization in fall 2009.
Fr. John McDermott, SJ, professor of theology, published "Joseph Ratzinger on Faith and Reason," Angelicum 86 (2009). He addressed The Fellowship of Catholic Scholars convention on "Joseph Ratzinger's Understanding of Faith and Reason," Providence, Rhode Island, September 25. He was a consultant to a meeting of the USCCB Committee on Doctrine, Baltimore, Maryland, November 15.
Dr. Edward Peters, Edmund Cardinal Szoka Chair of Faculty Development, continued his work with the Religious Sign Translation Committee of the National Catholic Office for the Deaf by serving as the Latin consultant during the sign translation sessions, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, September 18-20. His article defending the validity of sign language as expressive of sacramental form was published in Studia Canonica and his canonical guide to the writings of classical moral theologians appeared in the 2009 edition of Roman Replies and CLSA Advisory Opinions, Canon Law Society of America. He gave interviews to various media outlets including Our Sunday Visitor, the Associated Press and EWTN Global Catholic Radio. He recently joined University Faculty for Life.

Fr. Daniel Trapp, associate professor of theology, liturgy and sacraments, presented "Affective Maturity," National Conference of Diocesan Vocation Directors, Newark, New Jersey, September 27, and "The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick," St. Frances Cabrini Parish, Allen Park, Michigan, for the Archdiocesan Men's Conference, October 14. He helped coordinate the Federation of Seminary Spiritual Directors' conference on "The Relationship with God the Father," St. Vincent DePaul Seminary, Boynton Beach, Florida, October 22-25.
Dr. Peter Williamson, Adam Cardinal Maida Chair of Sacred Scripture, published Ephesians, which he authored, and Second Corinthians, which he co-edited, in the Catholic Commentary on Sacred Scripture, November. He attended the annual meeting of the Catholic Biblical Association, Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska, and presented "Scripture Across the Curriculum," August 1-4. He presented "Prayer in the Life and Teaching of Jesus" to an AOD young adults group, Transfiguration Parish, Southfield, Michigan, August 22, and "A Senior Apostle's Parting Advice to a Young Pastor in 2 Timothy," Fellowship of St. Paul gathering at SHMS, September 11. He began a ten-week Bible study on the Book of Revelation, Christ the King Parish, Ann Arbor, September 20. He led a discussion on "Scripture Across the Curriculum" at the joint faculty meeting, October 20, and began to chair a faculty working group to study this topic. He attended the annual meeting of Society of Biblical Literature, New Orleans, Louisiana, November 20-23.
