Alumni award winners for 2008 are Fr. Arthur Baranowski (outstanding clergy alumnus), left, Msgr. Robert V. Monticello (outstanding senior clergy) and Mr. Thomas Gaspard (outstanding lay alumnus). Dr. John Goyette (outstanding former faculty) could not attend.

Four men were honored for their outstanding contributions to their ministry and profession at the thirty-first Alumni Day Celebration, held at Sacred Heart Major Seminary on February 17. Alumni, resident clergy, faculty, seminarians, family and friends of the awardees gathered together to recognize the awardees' achievements.

Fr. Arthur Baranowski (SHS 1964) received the Bishop Henry Donnelly Award for outstanding clergy alumnus. He is an advocate of small faith communities as a method of renewing parish life. In 1990, Father formed the National Alliance of Parishes Restructuring into Communities (NAPRC) to advance this work on a local and national level.

Mr. Thomas Gaspard (SHS 1966) was awarded the Walter Romig Award for outstanding lay alumnus. For thirty years until retiring in 2001, he was senior manager for Citigroup Inc. He was founder and CEO of Citibank in Washington, D.C., and president of Citicorp subsidiary Transaction Technology Inc., in Santa Monica, California. In 1991, he joined the Order of Malta, a Catholic lay organization that seeks to glorify God through work with the sick and poor.

Rev. Msgr. Robert V. Monticello (SHS 1947) was selected for the Msgr. Albert Matyn Award for outstanding senior clergy. Monsignor has served the Church in many assignments, including Archdiocesan Director of Catholic Social Services, sociology instructor at Sacred Heart and Associate General Secretary of the United States Catholic Conference in Washington, D.C. He attained senior clergy status in 1999.

Dr. John Goyette (SHMS 1994-2002) was awarded the Msgr. Daniel Ryan award for outstanding former faculty, but was unable to attend. He was responsible for revamping Sacred Heart's philosophy program, which reflected a "Great Books" approach to the curriculum. Dr. Goyette also organized a successful conference on St. Thomas Aquinas' natural law theory, has published widely and now teaches in the Great Books program at Thomas Aquinas College in California.
