Some major responsibilities of the Moderator of the Curia include overseeing all programs and budgets of the departments and agencies, directing the goal-setting process for the departments and the Archdiocese, administering local involvement in the work of the Michigan Catholic Conference, serving as ex-officio member of the Presbyteral Council, coordinating and administering clergy services, clergy assignments, approving parish budgets and authorizing audits. He is also the Archdiocesan coordinator for Third Millennium efforts at spiritual renewal.

Detroit's Archbishop shares his pastoral leadership with several Auxiliary Bishops. Cardinal Maida has primary responsibility for teaching, sanctifying and governing the People of God in the Church of Detroit. As a member of the worldwide College of Bishops in communion with the Holy Father, our Cardinal Archbishop is our direct link with the Universal Church. Therefore, his concerns are focused not only on the needs of the Archdiocese of Detroit, but also on the national and international issues of the Church and the world.
In order to fulfill this ministry of sanctifying, teaching and governing, the Cardinal consults regularly with priests, religious and laity, parishes, vicariates, institutions and agencies.

The Chancellor coordinates all matters regarding Vicars, Consultors, the Presbyteral Council and the Program Review Committee. The Chancellor also oversees the matters of national collections, statistical reports and various contracts, the Office of Parish Support Services and serves as an ex-officio member of the Curia. Although the day-to-day operation of the Archdiocesan Archives is entrusted to a professional archivist, the Chancellor is responsible for its supervision.
For more than 25 years, the Archdiocese of Detroit has demonstrated an abiding commitment to the immigrants and refugees of the metropolitan area by providing immigration legal services, as well as resettlement and acculturation assistance to those in need.
The Metropolitan Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Detroit is established by Church law to assist the Archbishop in carrying out his judicial functions. The major portion of the work is directed toward the processing of petitions for annulment of marriages. Other judicial matters are handled at the request of the Archbishop.
The Office of Vocations is a special adjunct to the Archbishop's staff and serves to encourage men and women to consider vocations to ordained ministry or religious life. Its many outreach efforts include people of all ages and settings, and ethnic and racial backgrounds.
