The Department supervises and integrates the communication and media resources of the archdiocese, including the Offices of Public Relations, Television (CTND), and Printing and Mailing. It also serves as primary liaison to The Michigan Catholic newspaper and to the archdiocesan web site.
The Office of Television maintains a four-channel broadcast network utilizing frequencies in what’s now called Educational Broadband Service (EBS), formally the Instructional Television Fixed Service (ITFS) band. One of the channels is currently designated as the Catholic Television Network of Detroit (CTND), which distributes locally produced and nationally syndicated programs directly into homes and parish-receive sites via cable and/or direct satellite transmission. A weekly guide is available online and inside the back page of The Michigan Catholic newspaper. The office also produces and maintains a library of instructional, informational, and inspirational videos.
The Office of Printing and Mailing maintains a full service print
shop that serves all Central Service Departments and Offices, including Sacred Heart Major Seminary, along with the Archdiocesan parishes, school and Catholic agencies upon request. Other services include pickup, sorting and distribution of all interoffice and commercially processed mail and packages. Parish staff and other Catholic agencies receive a special consolidated mailing, which is assembled at the 6th Street Office and distributed weekly.
The Office of Public Relations serves as the focus of public
information and communication for the Archdiocese including: the internal Catholic public, the general public and the secular and religious media -print and broadcast. The Office works with Central Service Departments and Offices, parishes, schools, and local Catholic-based organizations in analyzing and recommending communications strategies and in understanding the use of various media.
Published weekly, The Michigan Catholic newspaper offers local, national and international news affecting today’s Church. Along with prominent columnists, it features reflections on prayer and the scriptures. There is regular coverage of cultural issues; the CTND program guide is provided with every issue.
