Another Catholic parish in the Archdiocese of Detroit has been sacked by thieves. This time, the intruders stole collection money from
St. John Neumann Church, 44800 Warren Road, in Canton. Fr. George Williams, pastor, estimates that $5,000 to $8,000 in cash was taken from the office safe.
The break-in occurred sometime after 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, and was discovered at 7:30 the next morning by the business manager. Parishioners arriving for the weekday morning Mass were surprised by the site of police cars and investigators at the church.
In addition to punching a hole into the safe, the thieves also ransacked several administrative offices. One door and two interior door windows were broken.
Anyone with any information about this break-in is encouraged to call Sgt. Rick Pomorski of the Canton Police Department at 734-394-5423 or St. John Neumann Parish at 734-455-5910.
Last week, thieves broke in to Most Holy Trinity Church in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood. Numerous sacred items were taken, including the tabernacle, which contained consecrated bread/hosts (the Holy Eucharist), and a figurine of the body of Jesus removed from a large cross. Chalices were taken from a sacristy safe and an 1800s-era brass chandelier was ripped from the ceiling. Because the worship space was desecrated, the church was blessed and re-consecrated at a special Mass last Thursday. Detroit Police are continuing their investigation.
