Catholic League director receives state award Published March 26, 2010
DETROIT — Detroit Catholic League Director Vic Michaels was named Athletic Director of the Year by the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.
Michaels was presented the award in Traverse City Monday at the annual MIAAA Mid Winter Conference, a gathering of more than 500 directors of athletics. The MIAAA is Michigan's professional organization of school athletic directors.
A lifetime Detroiter, Michaels was a member of the last graduating class of St. Ambrose High School in 1972. After attending Detroit Institute of Technology for four years on a basketball scholarship, he got his bachelor's degree from the University of Detroit in 1978.
Michaels taught history and physical education, and served as coach, athletic director and assistant principal at St. Clement High School in Center Line for 17 years, coaching men's (1978-95) basketball and women's (1980-85) basketball. During his tenure he earned a place in Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan 300 Victory Club. In addition, Michaels was named Class C "Coach of the Year" in 1984 with the girls' and 1987 with the boys' team.
Michaels started working for the Archdiocese of Detroit in 1995 and in 2003 became the seventh director of the Catholic League since the league's inception in 1926. Michaels has worked on numerous Michigan High School Athletic Association committees, served eight years on the association's representative council, and was recently named secretary/treasurer. Currently, he serves as the MIAAA Web site committee co-chair and on the executive board. He also serves as the Southeast Michigan Leagues and Conferences chairperson. Among his awards are honors from the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association and MIAAA Regional Athletic Director of the Year in 2001.
For fun, Michaels is a Red Wings season ticket holder, and enjoys other Detroit sports of all levels. He and his wife of 31 years, Linda, are members of St. Joan of Arc Parish in St. Clair Shores. They have two grown sons, Marc and Brad, who also work in athletics, and who both coach at Royal Oak Shrine Grade School.
Associate director of the MHAAA Tom Rashid said of Michaels: "His success comes from integrity in dealing with others, from trust that he has earned through fair and honest interaction with students, coaches, officials, parents, administrators and business people."
