Speaker to explore morality
by Kristin Lukowski of The Michigan Catholic Published August 28, 2009
Detroit - "Thinking straight in a twisted culture" will be the subject of a presentation at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish when it hosts a nationally known philosopher for its Dignity of Life speaker series.
Robert P. George, founder of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University, is recognized for promoting the dignity of the human person from its earliest beginnings. He has written 11 books and innumerable articles, reviews and commentaries, and speaks publicly.
He'll present "Conscience, Justice and Human Life: Thinking Straight in a Twisted Culture," on morality, ethics, law and the Catholic response, at 7 p.m. Sept. 9. A buffet dinner will be served at 6 p.m. for $10 per person. The church is at 47650 North Territorial Road, Plymouth, at Beck Road.
The series is sponsored by the Gospel of Life Committee at Good Counsel, headed up by parishioners Mark Renfer and Nina Bryhn. Brhyn said the series proved popular last year, its first, and is now open to everyone for free, as it's more important for everyone to be there than to collect a fee.
"We feel the issues become more and more important every day as the world becomes harsher and harsher," she said. "These are issues that are not going to go away."
Their committee has focused on many life topics, not just abortion: voting as a Catholic, dying in Christ, stem-cell research, and other issues. "We cover a lot of issues - we cover everything that we can think of," Bryhn said. "The sessions teach us about the various ways human dignity is being attacked by culture."
The parish's committee was formed out of the idea of Pope John Paul II's "Evangelium Vitae," his 1995 evangelical letter that discussed the worth of the human person. The Dignity of Life speaker series is a response to the crisis of modernity, as described by the late pope, the degradation of dignity and the human person.
George's most famous work, "The Clash of Orthodoxies," explores how on life and civil rights issues, traditional views are superior to liberal views.
In November, the parish will be hosting columnist, author George Weigel.
