Since his ordination on June 5, 1954, Cardinal Szoka has given himself wholeheartedly to whatever the Church asked of him. His 52 years of priestly and episcopal ministry have had a vast and comprehensive influence in the life of the Church—in the state of Michigan and, indeed, throughout the world.

The Pope, in accordance with Canon 354 of the Code of Canon Law, has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Edmund Casimir Szoka, president of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State and of the Governorate of Vatican City State, requesting him, nonetheless, to remain in office until September 15, 2006, with all the faculties inherent to that role.

"There are a lot of things I miss. I miss being in my own country. I miss speaking English, since I have to speak Italian almost all the time in my work," Cardinal Szoka said.

There was a new pope. The Archdiocese of Detroit was showing signs of financial struggles. And, after 22 years of leading the Archdiocese of Detroit, Cardinal John Dearden – the man who so well helped the archdiocese, and the nation, adapt to the new era of Vatican II – had announced his retirement the previous July.

Szoka Library offers vast collection for learning

DETROIT – Fr. Marc Gawronski can remember climbing up to the archive room in the library of St. John's Provincial Seminary in Plymouth Township.
The lighting was bad, and the stacks were overcrowded.
"Things were very close together," Fr. Gawronski said, recalling his time at the seminary in the 1980s. "You couldn't have more than one person looking in the same tight area."

Every cardinal is assigned a titular church, and he was assigned his, better known in Rome as the Church of St. Gregory the Great on the ancient Celian Hill, when he was made cardinal in 1988.

Perhaps it was the enforced frugality of a Depression childhood in western Michigan that instilled in the young Edmund Casimir Szoka the appreciation for fiscal responsibility that was to become a hallmark of his later ministry as a bishop, archbishop and cardinal.
